How to Choose the Right Website Hosting for Your Small Business
Shared, VPS, managed or cloud? Compare speed, uptime, backups, security, support and true cost to pick hosting that fits your business.

Your website can have sharp copy, a clean design and a clear call to action, and still lose customers because of where it lives. Hosting decides how fast your pages load, how often the site is reachable, how quickly you can recover when something breaks and how easily you can grow.
Most small businesses pick a host once, often on price alone, and never look at it again. Here's how to make that choice deliberately, in plain language.

Why hosting deserves more than a price comparison
Hosting is the foundation everything else sits on. A slow server makes every page slow, however well it's built. An unreliable one takes your enquiry forms and checkout offline with it. A host with weak backups turns a bad update into a lost week.
The cheapest plan can be the right one. It just needs to be chosen for the right reasons.
The main types of hosting, in plain terms
- Shared hosting: your site shares one server with many others. It's inexpensive and simple, which suits small brochure sites, but a busy neighbour can slow you down and you have limited control.
- VPS (virtual private server): a reserved slice of a server with its own resources. You get more consistent performance and control, but someone has to manage updates and security.
- Managed hosting: the provider handles the technical upkeep (server updates, caching, backups and often security monitoring) for a specific platform such as WordPress. It costs more, and saves a lot of time.
- Cloud platforms: services such as Microsoft Azure run your site on infrastructure that can scale up or down as demand changes. Azure App Service, for example, is a fully managed web hosting service with an SLA-backed uptime of 99.95 percent. This is the natural fit for web apps, online stores with traffic spikes and businesses planning to grow.
- Static hosting with a CDN: for sites that don't need a database on every page view, pages can be pre-built and served from a content delivery network close to each visitor. It's fast, secure and often very affordable.
Match the hosting to what your site actually does
Start with the job, not the plan name:
- A brochure site with a few pages and a contact form: quality shared hosting, managed hosting or static hosting is usually enough.
- A content-heavy site you update weekly: managed hosting keeps the platform patched and fast without you thinking about it.
- An online store or booking system: prioritise reliability, backups and support. Managed or cloud hosting is worth the extra cost.
- A custom web app or product: a cloud platform gives you scaling, deployment pipelines and monitoring from day one.

Seven things to compare before you sign up
Use these seven checks to compare any two hosts side by side.
1. Speed and server location
Server response time is the first step in every page load. Google's web.dev guidance suggests most sites should aim for a Time to First Byte of 0.8 seconds or less. Choose a data centre region near most of your customers, or a CDN if they're spread across countries.
2. Uptime, and what the guarantee really covers

An uptime percentage sounds precise, but the small print matters. As Microsoft's guide to reading service agreements puts it, definitions matter as much as percentages: what counts as downtime, what's excluded (such as planned maintenance) and whether you must claim credits yourself. For scale, 99.9% uptime still allows roughly 43 minutes of downtime in a 30-day month.
3. Backups you can actually restore

Ask how often backups run, how long they're kept, where they're stored and how a restore works. CISA's backup guidance for small and medium businesses recommends the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of important files, on two types of storage, with one copy off-site. It also advises testing restores, not just assuming they'll work. Keep at least one copy outside your hosting account.
4. Security included by default

Look for free HTTPS certificates (certificate authorities such as Let's Encrypt provide free TLS certificates, so there's little reason to pay extra), automatic server patching, a web application firewall, malware scanning and two-factor login for your hosting account.
5. Support that answers when it matters

Check the support hours, channels and whether real technical help is included or charged separately. Your site won't wait for business hours to break.
6. Room to grow

Find out how upgrading works. Can you add resources with a click, or does growth mean a migration? Will a traffic spike from a campaign slow the site or take it offline?
7. True cost, and an easy exit

Compare renewal prices, not just the introductory offer, and add up extras such as backups, email, certificates and staging sites. Keep your domain registered in your own name, ideally separate from your host, so you can move without a fight.
A quick pre-launch hosting checklist
- HTTPS is working on every page, including the non-www version of your domain
- Automatic backups are on, and you've tested one restore
- An uptime monitor alerts you when the site goes down
- Admin and hosting accounts use strong passwords and two-factor login
- Your domain, DNS and hosting logins are stored somewhere the business controls
- Page speed has been checked on mobile after launch
Signs you've outgrown your current host
- Pages feel slower at busy times of day
- Outages happen often enough that customers mention them
- Support tickets take days to resolve
- You've added a store, bookings or an app, and the plan wasn't built for it
- Every renewal costs more while the service stays the same
Any one of these is a good reason to review your setup. Moving hosts is very manageable with a staging copy, a planned DNS switch and a quick check of every key page afterwards.
